Quick answer: Armenia drives on the right, with left-hand-drive cars and distances in kilometres. Main roads are decent, but mountain routes are winding and can be rough, and winter brings snow and ice at altitude. Bring an International Driving Permit alongside your licence, keep your documents handy for police checkpoints, and fill up when you can. Pick up your car at the terminal — see our car rental guide.

A hire car is the best way to see Armenia at its own pace — Lake Sevan and forested Dilijan, the monasteries of Garni and Geghard, Khor Virap under Mount Ararat, and the wine country of Areni. If you are used to driving at home, the basics transfer easily: Armenia drives on the right. But a few local realities are worth knowing before you set off from Yerevan.

The basics

Cars are left-hand drive and you keep to the right, so junctions and overtaking feel natural for most European and North American drivers. Distances and speed limits are in kilometres. Road signs are in Armenian, usually with Latin transliteration on main routes, though smaller roads may be Armenian only — a map app with offline maps helps. Seatbelts are compulsory and the drink-drive limit is low and enforced.

Documents, fuel and checkpoints

PointWhat to know
LicenceAn International Driving Permit alongside your national licence is recommended and often required
PapersKeep your passport, licence, IDP and rental documents in the car for police checkpoints, which are routine
FuelPetrol, diesel and widely used LPG/CNG; stations are common near towns but sparser in remote areas — fill up before long stretches
TollsNo motorway tolls in Armenia

Parking and cities

In central Yerevan, use marked bays and paid zones, and don't leave valuables on show. Traffic in the city can be busy and parking tight around Republic Square and the centre, so many visitors leave the car for city days and use it for trips out. Police checkpoints on intercity roads are normal — slow down, be polite, and have your papers ready.
