Most travellers race past it on the way into Yerevan, but the single most rewarding thing near Yerevan Zvartnots International Airport (EVN) is only minutes away. Echmiadzin is the Rome of the Armenian Church — the seat of the Catholicos and a place of pilgrimage for 1,700 years. If you have a few hours between flights, or on your first or last day, it is well worth the short hop.
What to see
- The Mother Cathedral (Etchmiadzin Cathedral): considered the oldest cathedral in the world, founded in the early 4th century when Armenia became the first nation to adopt Christianity as a state religion. Part of a UNESCO World Heritage site, it is the spiritual heart of the country.
- St Hripsime and St Gayane churches: beautiful 7th-century churches nearby, also UNESCO-listed, and masterpieces of early Armenian architecture.
- The treasury museum: holds relics revered in the Armenian Church, including what is venerated as a fragment of Noah's Ark and the Holy Lance.
The Zvartnots ruins — right by the airport
Between the airport and Echmiadzin stand the haunting circular ruins of Zvartnots Cathedral, a vast 7th-century church that collapsed in an earthquake and gives the airport its name. Also UNESCO-listed, the ruins and their small museum are an atmospheric add-on that fits perfectly with an airport-side visit — you can pair the ancient ruin with the living cathedral in a single short trip.
How to visit from the airport
Echmiadzin and the Zvartnots ruins are about a 15-minute drive from the terminal, just to the west. The easiest way is a taxi, a Yandex Go or GG ride, or a pre-booked car that waits for you — handy, since return rides can be thinner out here than in the city. If you are on a layover, store your bags first — see our luggage storage guide. Dress modestly for the churches (covered shoulders; women may wish to carry a headscarf), and always leave a clear buffer to get back and re-clear security.
Making the most of a short visit
An hour or two is enough for the Mother Cathedral and the Zvartnots ruins; add St Hripsime if you have longer. With more time, central Yerevan — the Cascade, Republic Square, the Vernissage market — is only 20 minutes on.
