Yerevan Airport Layover: What to Do (EVN)

A layover at Yerevan Zvartnots International Airport (EVN) can be anything from a coffee airside to a real taste of Armenia — the city is only 20 minutes away and Echmiadzin even closer. Here is what to do by how much time you have. Always leave a clear buffer to return and re-clear security.

Less than 3 hours — stay airside

With a short connection it is not worth leaving. Relax airside: grab a coffee or a meal (see our food guide), browse duty-free, use the free Wi-Fi, and — if you want comfort — a lounge. Keep an eye on the flight board.

3–6 hours — Echmiadzin

With a few hours, the town of Echmiadzin (Vagharshapat) is only about 15 minutes away — home to the Mother Cathedral, the spiritual centre of the Armenian Church and a UNESCO site. A taxi or pre-booked car that waits for you makes it comfortable.

6–10 hours — central Yerevan

With more time, head into Yerevan (about 20 minutes). Walk the Cascade and its sculpture garden, see Republic Square, browse the Vernissage market, and eat well before heading back. On a clear day, Mount Ararat dominates the skyline.

10 hours or more — go further

With a long stop or an overnight, add Garni and Geghard (a pagan temple and a rock-cut monastery, east of the city) or the shore of Lake Sevan. Store your bags first — see luggage storage — and use a pre-booked car that waits for you.

Can I leave the airport? Practical rules

• Check your visa status — Armenia is visa-free for many nationalities, but confirm before you plan to leave airside.
• Store your bags rather than carry them — never leave luggage unattended.
• Currency is the dram (֏); carry some cash. Confirm your onward gate before you relax.
